In Lisa Parks and James Schwoch “Introduction” to Down to Earth, it shows the impact of global imagery. Space exploration began to increase more and more, and satellites were thought of to create world peace and stability, but also increased military power. In most of these readings, there is a connection between military power and the development of images. This increased of military power caused for satellite imagery to become a growing movement, especially after 9/11. Due to the production of satellites, television was introduced into everyday life.…

Racism is embedded into essentially every American institution and is nurtured by people who have racist predispositions. Ta-Nehisi Coates in Between the World and Me, writes “the ground we walked was trip-wired. The air we breathed was toxic. The water stunted our growth. We could not get out” (Coates, p. 28).…
Decoded was a glimpse into the rough environment of world known artist Shawn Carter, or better recognized as Jay-Z. In this book, Carter gives a clear analysis of not only his lyrics, but also the meaning of each lyric. He goes into detailed memories to steer the audience in the direction of a better understanding and acceptance to a different perspective than of those that are given via social media. In order to accomplish this, Jay-Z delves into three main topics. Firstly, he hoped to make a valid argument that hip-hop lyrics from any rapper are poetry if you looked behind the lines and examined them enough.…
By presenting A Stolen Life from Jaycees point of view, Jaycee Dugard reveals her painful experience kidnapped in the backyard of a married couples house. This view of events is very subjective because Dugard shares her mixed emotions towards her eighteen years trapped in the backyard. Sometimes she feels loved by her kidnapper Phillip, other times she feels betrayed and scared. Dugard’s words when she says, “I feel so helpless and vulnerable. I feel so alone… I can’t stop crying” (Dugard 30) shows her unique perspective on how in this moment she is nervous experiencing something painful for the first time, but she is also lies to spend time with him..…

Most Americans like to think of The United States as a meritocracy. Children are and have been taught from a very young age that if you truly worked hard enough and focused, you could achieve anything you set your mind to. They often don’t mention the fact that sometimes hard work and attention may not be enough, and that in some places of America that will never be enough to truly achieve what you wish to accomplish. The book There Are No Children Here mentions on the front cover that there also exists “the other America.”…

Since then, he has been an infamous part of an ever-growing pop music trend- using misogyny to sell singles to the teenage market. Recent hit singles follow this same pattern precisely, with some notable examples being ‘Talk Dirty’ by Jason Derulo, ‘Shut Up And Drive’ by Rihanna, and ‘Blurred Lines’ by Robin Thicke. They all contain lyrics that talk about women in a degrading manner, highlighting their curvaceous bodies and how desirable they look.…

The stigma of mental illness is an influential negative attribute in all social relations especially with teenagers. In her article, “The C Word in the Hallway”, Anna Quindlen urges parents, educators and politicians to end their ignorance of mental health and calls for action. Through her use of appeals to pathos and logos, a unique progression of ideas and devices, Quindlen builds an effective argument that conveys the importance of recognizing the signs of mental illness and providing proper treatment in order to save lives. Quindlen begins her argument through the usage of appeal to pathos by first defining the phrase “psychological autopsy”.…
OutKast, a popular rap group throughout the nineties and early 2000s, has a renowned song entitled “Hey Ya!” which features the smooth flows of Andre 3000 and hard hitting rhymes of Big Boi. The song has been a huge hit for years and is virtually known by every American under the age of thirty. When the song was released in 2003, I was just three years old, but had already adopted my dad’s love for music and I frequented the kitchen tile as my dance floor whenever music was playing. OutKast’s song “Hey Ya!” holds a different weight than most other songs I grew up around because it is one of few memories I remember vividly about my childhood.…
Many artists these days tend to sample other authors work into their songs to add a greater purpose or meaning to their music. Although this technique is not used in a lot of genres and appears mostly in hip-hop music, forms of music sampling have been around since the late 1900’s. Artists like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar are known for sampling other artist’s music or speeches and incorporating them into their songs to enhance the message or theme that is trying to be presented. Kendrick Lamar uses a sample in his song “Alright” to help illuminate what life is like as an African American and the struggles that they face due to their skin color.…
