A Brief History of Technology in Missouri Businesses Technology in Missouri businesses has an early start and a place in the history of technology in Missouri. One of the early Missouri claims to fame in technology was built by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad in 1932. This was a lift span bridge over the Missouri River at Boonville, Missouri. This bridge replaced one that had been built earlier and was no longer capable of handling the heavier railroad equipment of that era. The new lift span bridge gained fame and attention as the longest railroad lift-span bridge in the world (History One - “M” in the MKT). The lift span was 408 feet long and weighed two million pounds. The total length of the bridge was 1,615 feet (Bridge Hunter.com). …show more content…
Number two is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland with 228 points. This institute is dedicated to innovation. Research carried out at the institute every year results in 60 to 80 registered patents. Number one on the list is the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland. . They proudly claimed 242 points on the scale. They are dedicated to education, research, and the advancement of technology. This institution offers students more than 250 laboratories to conduct personalized research. What sets this Institute apart from many others on the list is that it was founded by the federal government as a national center of excellence in science and technology. The college textbook may soon be a thing of the past. The paper and ink era is giving way to technology. Colleges around the country are using digital versions (e-books) of books that can be read off of a computer screen. Northwest Missouri State in rural Missouri is one of the first colleges and universities to embrace going virtually book-free. Students at Northwest Missouri State are issued laptops when they get to campus. Besides just offering the on-screen version of the bound textbook, the new e-books are interactive. They allow you to search, mark pages, highlight, and cut and paste. Sharing notes in a social network is even possible. Students are reacting favorably to the use of e-textbooks. While some professors hate to see the actual textbook go away, they realize the use of e-books is much more efficient and are willing to give it a try. According to the National Association of College Stores, 18 percent of college students have purchased one. Northwest Missouri State is a good position to go completely digital. In addition to renting the laptops, students rent all of their books from the college. With so many books available as e-books, the college decided to go ahead and make the switch to e-books (Paper Cut).
