There are 8 public universities in Mississippi that comes under the Institution of Higher Learning (IHL). Of the 8 universities, only Mississippi State University and University of Mississippi offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in geography. Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, Delta State University, Mississippi State for Women, and Mississippi Valley State University offer no geography degrees. East Mississippi community college offers 15 sections of geography classes, and has more than 200 students enroll in them each year. They also offer online classes in geography. A study abroad course in Central America is being proposed. Mr. Shurlds – geography faculty at East Mississippi CC is a Willian Winter Scholar.
Southwest Mississippi Community College offers only AA degree. They have 5 world geography sections offered every year. Both on-campus and online courses are offered with an annual enrollment of about 150 students in geography classes. Geography faculty wants to increase the course offerings in geography especially they want to offer GIS related classes, but have to first develop infrastructure in terms of hardware and software to offer these classes.
