The civil war was a fight regarding rights to own slaves. Many southern men joined the confederate army to protect their right to own slaves. Due to the fact that white supremacy groups such as the Ku Klux Klan have adopted the flag as a symbol, the stars and bars received a bad name. The white supremacy groups flew the flag while terrorizing the opposite race and it became a symbol of hatred to the black community.
