Mission Trip

As a young kid, I would always go to the cabinets in our kitchen to look for food. Every time the doors opened and I saw the canned green beans alongside the uncooked pasta, my mom upstairs would hear me yell, “we don’t have anything to eat”.

Being a kid, you really do not think of anyone but yourself. It isn't that kids are selfish, they just have not been taught the art of selflessness. Kids also are not very grateful for what they have because they do not understand the value and privilege of being able to buy toys, clothing, and food.

For the most part, I am a very selfless person and I gain joy by helping and serving others.

Most people believe that a mission trip is expected to change a person in some areas that they may struggle in. For me, my trip to the DR opened my eyes to what other people have to deal with in this world and has made me much more appreciative of all that I have.

I described the huts made of plastic and metal with a thick layer of dirt covering the outside, the diseases that plagued the people there, and the overall living conditions that existed in the crude villages. My belief is that in order to gain appreciation for something, you genuinely need to open your eyes and walk in someones shoes. Only then is when you are able to sympathize with those who are less fortunate. Many things in my life have been taken for granted, but since my humbling trip to the Dominican, my time here on Earth has been spent appreciating God’s great gift of life as well as being able to serve others. Whether its going to LA for the weekend and working at a soup kitchen or even just helping someone pickup their wallet they just dropped, I have been taught to always be helpful wherever you
