Mission Statement On Elder Abuse

In the American today there are many dependent adults who are hurting and need help. These people are not able to protect and care for themselves and there are people who take advantage of that weakness. Abuse can take shape in a variety of different ways. A few of those ways are: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, neglect, abandonment and financial or material exploitation. The NCEA, National Center on Elder Abuse, works towards stopping and preventing abuse, neglect and exploitation. First, it is important to highlight the NCEA’s mission statement: “National, state, and local partners in the field will be fully prepared to ensure that older Americans will live with dignity, integrity, independence, and without abuse, neglect, and exploitation.” The NCEA works quite hard to uphold this standard they have set for themselves. They have many highly trained staff and have worked many years to get to the point they are at today. On the National Center on Elder Abuse’s website it has a page where it gives a brief history. However, this page does not have hardly any specifics on their history and made this requirement quite difficult to fulfill. Next the person calls an abuse hotline or state or local APS office to report suspicion where priority response time is assessed. If it is an emergency it is immediately sent to the police or medical staff in their area. However, sometimes it does not meet the NCEA’s requirements and it the person is given information on a more appropriate agency. When it is time for the report to be responded to a caseworker will assess the victims risk factor. After that the caseworker will assess if the victim has the capability to understand their risks and if they can give informed consent to investigate
