This book calls Christians to open their minds to create building relationships with this community rather than criticize one another for different beliefs. This book incorporates the gospel as well as genetics to help each community learn to understand each other and respect each other. In chapters one and two, the quality of trust is examined and used to help people create friendships that are built from loving one another for how they treat each other rather than one another’s sexual orientation. In our class review of chapters three through five, we discussed ways that as Christians, even if we do not agree with the LGBTQ community, we can still respect and love one another.…

Current United Methodist theological conversation presents heterosexual as the normative expression of human sexuality, dismissing gay men and lesbians entirely. UM Church policies ignore the presence, voice, and experience of gay persons, sending the message that they do not matter and that their spiritual existence is irrelevant. This circumstance presents an unjust narrative that silences and prohibits individuals from participating fully in creation and contradicts the mission of the Church. Even though United Methodists are theologically divided over issues of human sexuality, Christian leaders cannot in good conscience marginalize gay and lesbian persons for the sake of convention. Current UM Church policies rely on complicated rhetoric…

Ephesians 4:11-12 states, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;”. Pastors, evangelists and teachers are called to equip others, therefore we should focus on the most valuable and faithful individuals; those that show promise of long-term, meaningful commitment to the ministry of the Lord (Wilkinson, 369). Wilkinson notes that Christ had to steward His time and energies to maximize the growth of the Kingdom (Wilkinson, 369). If some of our students show a deeper commitment, then we should test their resolve. If they seem…

It is her hope that lessons gleaned from queer experience “will provide trajectories for Christian inquiry that could bring new energy and urgency to the progressive church and its proclamation of the gospel” (13). In Queer Virtue, Edman explores the essential teachings of Christian traditions in the light of queer experience, and then draws upon the virtues of queer identity to lay out a path for revitalizing Christian practice. Issues like identity, community, pride, risk, family, authenticity, hospitality, love, and intimacy are crucial to the future of Christianity, and the queer perspective speaks to each of them. By drawing attention to these shared ethical foundation of the Christian and queer communities, Edman encourages to renew a conscious commitment to love and…

John, shares with readers about the several religious leaders and people around the world who have shown acceptance and God’s love to the LGBT community. A few religious leaders were stripped of their “ministerial credentials for officiating same-sex” marriages (John 3). According to John, Frank Schaefer was “defrocked by the United Methodists Church” for officiating same-sex marriage for his own son (2). Eventually, he was reinstated, but Shaefer wants the United Methodist Church to accept and include “All God’s Children” (John 2).…

Unlike many pastors I had the privilege to choose my denomination rather than being born into it. I am so glad that I selected the United Methodist Church because in large part I strongly support the church’s doctrinal and theological positions on many important issues. I have learned much about my church and my faith during my spiritual journey. Attending various seminaries and through theological studies has been a great blessing for me, it will help me to be a blessing to other United Methodists church members of all ages. I believe I am called to utilize my gifts and talents as a pastor and teacher to teach about God's love and God's desire for humanity.…

My main goal is to shape young people into disciples filled with Bible knowledge and to help send them out in the world to witness to the unsaved. I plan to do this by combining the discipleship model and the ministry model talked about by Richard R. Dunn in his book, “Reaching A Generation For Christ”. He states that the philosophy of the discipleship model as, “The discipleship model trains students to be God’s people in an ungodly world, equipped with Bible study and prayer skills developed in a caring atmosphere with a view to reproducing their Christian lives in other” (175). This philosophy would be fulfilled by small groups or “trainings” held on a weekly basis. I would like to keep a very close, relational youth group.…
