Law enforcement is constantly fighting crime and homicide is cases are no exceptions. The City of San Antonio Uniform Crime Reports (2016) states, “So far in 2016 from January thru May 2016 there are fifty-four cases of homicide reported” (City of San Antonio, 2000-2016). Some detectives especially homicide detectives will investigate and solve many homicide and murder cases. A homicide detective’s primary function will be to collect evidence at the crime scene. The National Forensic Science Technology Center states, “…A wide variety of physical evidence can be collected at a scene that is deemed valuable (“probative”) for collection and investigation: One example is biological evidence blood, body fluids, hair and other tissues. Second is latent print evidence like fingerprints, palm prints, and foot prints. Third, is footwear and tire track evidence? Fourth, is digital evidence cell phone records, Internet logs, and email messages” (NFSTC, 2013). Detectives are required to document and collect samples this will include documenting the time, and the location of each piece of evidence collected. Properly marking any of the collected samples and who sealed, marked and stored the samples.
