What possible intentions on peculiar behaviour takes a toll on humans? Adela Strangeworth, a respectful old woman is one of the enduring families on Main Street. A small town of customary folks of all ages lives upon. Miss Strangeworth sometimes believed to think that the town belonged to her. As she comes as pleasant, her jealousy, envy, and ego towards people expanded. She is outspoken and crafts letters to disengage the people from their loved ones.
Miss Strangeworth's family has been in the town for many generations. By placing upon her family's hierarchy, she states "my grandfather built the first house on Pleasant Street [...] my family has lived here for better than a hundred years" (163). As she progresses in the story, she finds that the people of the town are acting peculiar. She notices that each person she has a conversation with noted as 'sloppy' and 'shambolic'. Along the lines "Miss Strangeworth noticed that Miss Chandler had not taken much trouble with her hair that morning [...] Miss Strangeworth hated sloppiness" (167). This quotation explains the actions of others, takes a role in her motive conflict. Miss Strangeworth decides to write anonymous letters to the people. Although these letters were to attack them from their wrongdoing, it is to say that she did it for pleasure. Each person that she wrote to, had someone of their own. For example, Miss Strangeworth wrote a letter to Linda and Dave about their so-called involved relationship. But she had no one but herself. Days after the mishap occurred, Miss Strangeworth overhears their conversation from Linda saying "I can't tell you Dave [...] I just can't. It's just nasty." He later says he didn't do anything wrong and ultimately shutting him out. By jeopardizing relationships and their effects on the people, it seems as she could not connect to them
