One of my favorite characters, Miss Alma LeFay Peregrine, is a character in the book Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, where she teaches and protects a handful of children with strange abilities, hence the word peculiar. Miss Peregrine aids the young protagonist, Jacob Portman, in his journey to discover his role in the peculiar world. As Miss Peregrine’s character develops, you see some of her more obvious traits. She is affectionate, teacherly, powerful, protective, and orderly. Of course, Miss Peregrine has more depth than just those five words, but these are some of her traits that I thought stuck out and are pretty important in describing Miss Peregrine.

Miss Peregrine is respected and listened to by her children. As she is a powerful ymbryne, there’s no reason not to respect her. Miss Peregrine is often called the Bird because of her peculiar ability. She can manipulate time and take the form of a peregrine falcon. When Enoch (one of the peculiars in the loop) says “Anyway, she can’t find out we been in here. She’ll hang us by our pinky toes!” (222) he knows Miss Peregrine will be mad, and he will be punished. He wouldn’t be worried if Miss Peregrine didn’t have some sort of power over them. The symbol I am using to display this trait is a lightning bolt.
Not only is Miss Peregrine teacherly, orderly, and powerful, but she is also very protective of her kids. As an example, on page 210, Miss Peregrine explains to Jacob, “As an ymbryne, it is my sworn duty to keep those children safe and above all that means keeping them here--in the loop--on this island.” This quote perfectly reflects how serious Miss Peregrine is about the safety of her children.
