Supporting characters can be some of the most important characters. That’s the case for Miss Maudie. At first, Miss Maudie just seems like the woman across the street, but the amount of things she contributes the story is copious. Despite being a smaller character in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, her optimism, relationship with Scout, and knowledge contribute greatly to the story and its themes.
Miss Maudie is by far the most optimistic character in To Kill a Mockingbird. She sees the best in every situation . This can especially be seen when her house burns down and she views it as a new opportunity saying, “‘Always wanted a smaller house, Jem Finch. Give me more yard. Just think, I’ll have more room for my azaleas now’’(82). Her optimism can also tie in with the theme of innocence portrayed throughout the story. We can see this most clearly in Scout’s narration and the children’s views of events happening in the story. This scene also contributes to another theme in the book,

She is an older resident of Maycomb and was around back when Nathan and Boo Radley were children. Because of this, she has logical theories about why Boo Radley chooses or is possibly forced to be isolating himself. One of these theories is because Mr. Radley was a foot washing Baptist. Her wisdom goes deeper than the Radleys though. Her and Atticus have the same take on a lot of ideas and events. When Atticus states that’s it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird, she says, “‘Your father’s right… mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy…’”(103). She also has some philosophical statements of her own. For example, after Atticus shoots Tim Johnson, Miss Maudie says that no one in their right mind would be proud of their talents. By saying this, she is stating that it is good to be humble which shows the difference between her and people like Bob Ewell. Although she isn’t as knowledgeable as Atticus, she is definitely still

In order to give Scout and Jem more accurate and modern views about society, Atticus starts by showing them how to use the tool of empathy in everyday life. Atticus understands the feelings that the people of Maycomb have about his position on race, but he’s still kind and gracious to them because he understands that they each have varying degrees of suffering in their own lives; “Atticus would sweep off his hat, wave gallantly to her and say, ‘Good evening Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening’”(Lee, 115). Atticus knows quite clearly the opinions that Ms. Dubose has about his profession and on Tom’s trial, but he still takes the time to greet and to compliment her. This is because he also knows about her struggle with morphine addiction, and after putting himself into her shoes, he realizes that her insults are…

Their father, probably the most level headed and humble person they ever met had hidden part of his past “Nevertheless, he refuses to use his background as an excuse to hold himself above others and instead is a model of tolerance and understanding” (“To Kill a Mockingbird”).…

She also tells Scout that she should stop wearing overalls and sneakers and start dressing like ‘lady.’ There was also institutionalized sexism because the government still refused to allow women to be on jury for a trial, and in To Kill A Mockingbird’s case, the trial for Tom Robinson. Miss Maudie (the neighborhood woman who teaches Scout and Jem lessons and gives them cake) wanted to be on the jury, but wasn’t able to because of her sex. Many people ignored the issue of sexism because that’s always how it had been. If a woman declared anger towards the system, her opinions were seen as a joke.…
