Miss Ida And I Run: A Short Story

Improved Essays
We ran. Miss Ida and I ran for what seemed liked hours. My legs hurt, then when numb, but when they started to hurt again I cried on the inside, for if I let any sound part from my lips there would be hell to pay. We fled for a reason I knew not. But we ran.

We rode on wagons, we walked on roads and hidden paths. We traveled with men on gallent quests, and met beautiful gypsies who danced long into the night. But as soon as Miss Ida saw any soldiers in uniform, we backtracked and switched our route.

One dark and eerie night as we were hunched down by our small fire, I dared ask the question that had been eating at me since the day Miss Ida ran through the market and ripped me away from my happy life.

There are people hiding in the trees. We will be captured or killed! I won’t allow you to cross.” I stood as firmly as I could, trying my best to mask my fear and present only strong defiance.

“Oh yes ye will, and ye will come with me. It will all be fine, child. De border is jus’ across the field!” She looked excited, too excited for freedom that she wasn’t thinking the matter through. But I couldn’t argue.

I stood close to her as she mumbled an ancient incantation, “guide us past our enemies, and hide us from our foes, make us invisible to anyone who sees.” As she finished a silvery blanket appeared above and draped around us, then dissolving. The spell was complete, no one could see us. Yet my organs still shifted.

Protected from human eyes we started into the clearing. I clung to Miss Ida. We were completely silent. When we reached the middle of the field I stopped. Rooted to the spot I stared into the trees. I had seen something. There was no denying it, something bigger than any bird was waiting in the trees. Could they see

She walked down the cold, dark corridor as she felt the soft and quiet wind run her by causing her to experience an ice-cold chill that ran up her spine. It was merely past six in the afternoon, yet the eerie atmosphere made it appear as if she were standing in the middle of a cemetery at the darkest hour of the night. The hot, moisty air made her clothes and hair cling to her skin. Her hands began to shake and sweat trickled down her palms. Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
