Characters play different roles in a piece of literature. Whereas some act as the protagonists, some play antagonistic roles. Some character also plays the role of developing the plot o the theme of the play. All these are roles that they play because of the unique character traits that they have. The key aim of this entire paper is to carry out an in-depth analysis of character traits of Miss Ferenczi in the short story Gryphon by Charles Baxter. In this short story, Miss Ferenczi represents people who live in the world of fantasy that does not have any limit. Because of this, Miss Ferenczi tries to impact her ideologies on the young learners she is given to teach. Unlike Mr. Hibler, who teaches them predictable subjects in a predictable ways. When she gets into the classroom, she is presented as a very strange teacher. In fact, one student jokes that she is from the planet Mars. When she enters the classroom, she carries a purple purse and a checkered lunchbox. She also wears glasses that are tinted. Additionally, her hair is done in a way that is completely strange to the students. This is in contrast to the regular teachers who would always dress in official manner.

The manner in which she introduces her lesson though captivating to the students, make them cautious. For instance, unlike Mr. Hibler, who would introduce her classes in the normal way through set-induction, she begins the class by drawing a tree on the chalkboard. She also tells the students that the room needs a tree. Her introduction is also quite scary. She then introduces herself by telling the students a very long and dramatic story about her grandfather who is a Hungarian prince, and her mother who is a world-famous pianist. Ferenczi also tells the children that when Mr. Hibler, who is their regular teacher returns, six times eleven will be sixty-six again. From this, it can be proved that she was intentionally giving the students substitute facts. The impact of all these substitute facts is evident when the students start to argue about them. There exist those students who tend to believe that the substitute’s facts are realistic and can be justified by logics while others believe that the teacher is lying to them. For instance, Tommy, who is one of the students wants to believe the substitute facts and the stories that she tells them. He tries to provide evidence to other students to prove that whatever they are being taught by her Ms. Ferenczi is true. At some point Tommyconsults a dictionary to find the meaning of “Gryphon". Though he finds the meaning to be ‘fabulous beast," he misunderstands the meaning of the word "fabulous" in the context and takes it as evidence that Ms. Ferenczi has been feeding them with a lot of facts.
