Another problem businesses have with extending maternity leave is the fact some employees never return from maternity leave at all. This can be particularly saddening if the employee was well-liked, but other employees wait until the minute to notify their supervisors they will not be returning. At that point, the temporary employee has already been given their last day and the employer must begin the whole recruitment process over again. Many employers also become frustrated with women who come back from leave and expect the same pay and level of authority, but also the flexibility to work fewer hours and to leave early for soccer games and ballet recitals. Some employers have even admitted that there is a temptation to avoid hiring young…

In the case of Mary Mallon, health care officials placed the greater good of the population above the rights of an individual, for the right reasons. However, officials at the New York City Health Department went about it in the wrong way. I do not think Mary should have been kept in isolation for the rest of her life. However, I do believe she was given a fair chance at a normal life when she was told to stop cooking.…

The 1970 Act only dealt with equal pay for the same work but in 1975 the EU directive on Equal Pay was passed based on article 119. In 1978, despite the passage of legislation to promote equal pay, women’s position in the UK was still worse than in Italy, France, Germany, or the Benelux countries in 1972. However, The Act has now been mostly superseded by Part 5, chapter 3, of the Equality Act 2010. The Equality Act 2010 legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society. The act has made it against the law to discriminate against anyone because of age, being or becoming a transsexual person, being married or in a civil partnership, being pregnant or having a child, disability, race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion, belief or lack of religion/belief, sex or sexual…

According to the class notes, mothers with one child earn seven percent less than women without children. A woman with two or more children earns fourteen percent less than a woman without children. The article, “British Women Face Dramatic Pay Gap 'Penalty’ When They Become Mothers”, states that young women in their thirties still face a severe “pay penalty” when they become mothers, despite the gender gap falling in Britain. The wage gap is far smaller when women are young, but opens up after the birth of their first baby. It suggested time taken off and part-time working could mean mothers miss out on promotions, experience - and effectively incur a “wage penalty.”…
