“Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield is a short story about an old woman attempting to live her sad, lonely life through others. Through indirect characterization Mansfield conveys to the readers the pseudo happiness, self deception, detachment and loneliness Miss brill suffers from. Although Mansfield never truly tells the reader about Miss Brill’s personality; through point of view the reader can infer what Miss brill is like and her state of being. The third person limited point of view used by Mansfield allows the readers to perceive the story through Miss Brill’s twisted perception; her words, thoughts, and actions.
