The stories Miss Awful by Arthur Cavanaugh and Charles by Shirley Jackson have many similarities in their characters, settings, and theme. Despite all of their similarities, they tell entirely different stories. In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting the two stories, Miss Awful and Charle s.
First of all, I would like to talk about their setting. Both stories switch between a school and athome setting. Charles seems to take place during the early or mid20th century, Miss Awful also seems to take place around the same time, possibly a decade or two after. Miss Awful ’s main characters consist of Roger, Roger’s mother, and Miss Orville. The character’s behavior greatly differ between the stories, as well. For example, Roger seems to be wellbehaved kid for the most part. Laurie, however (Going under the alias of Charles), is very misbehaved.
Lastly, the stories’ themes. As previously stated, these two stories have many similar elements, but have entirely different themes. For example, I think that the theme of Charles is something along the lines of how Laurie started to grow up and began to make his own decisions, in this case, deciding that he would misbehave. I think that the theme of Miss Awful is that we should look for a deeper meaning in people’s actions.
Even though the messages between the stories are different, one could argue that the themes are slightly similar to each other. Charles ’s theme is focused on Laurie’s choices to misbehave, which are his actions. Miss Awful ’s theme has to do with understanding people’s actions. Both of the themes deal with the actions of people.
Those were most of the important similarities between Charles and Miss Awful . I, personally, enjoyed Miss Awful over Charles because I can relate more towards
