Many people are under the impression that Planned Parenthood is selling fetal tissue for profit (Chris Ostendorf). However, this is a gross misrepresentation of the ideas that Planned Parenthood embodies. Planned Parenthood is often scrutinized because they perform abortions and provide abortion services, when in reality, they are so much more. Providing for men and women, Planned Parenthood is a diverse source of health care. Planned Parenthood was founded October 16, 1916 as a “nonprofit organization that provides reproductive health services in the United States and internationally (Wikipedia). For women, they have emergency contraception kits and reversible contraception such as long lasting methods like IUD’s and birth control implants. Planned Parenthood provides vasectomies for men. Approximately 41% of Planned Parenthood facilities contain STI/STD testing and treatment. This includes HPV treatments, HIV tests, and other treatment for men and women (Planned Parenthood). Contrary to popular belief, only 3% of Planned Parenthood facilities provide abortion services. There are roughly 10,933,675 procedures done a year at PP, and only 327,166 of those are abortions (Planned Parenthood : Services). Some will argue that ObamaCare provides the same services, however you have to qualify for it. Many people make just above the amount needed to qualify, therefore they have to buy their own insurance. Seeing as how insurance is costly, the people who make too much for ObamaCare do not make enough to afford individual insurance. Jessica, age 30, had this to say about Planned Parenthood, “The staff were very caring and professional...which helped me on the journey of recovering from my sexual assault.” (Catherine Pearson) Direct help was provided for Jessica, which in turn aided her on her road to recovery. “They [Planned Parenthood] found abnormal cells on my cervix, removed them early enough and saved me from cervical cancer.” (Catherine Pearson) Because Planned Parenthood was affordable and available, Maggie was able to get the screening she needed and saved her from developing cancer. “The only reason I was able to have regular OB-GYN visits for years was because Planned Parenthood made it affordable.” (Catherine Pearson) Once more, affordability made it possible for women to be properly taken care of, especially for Tiffany, age 41. A lot of people disagree with the amount of people Planned Parenthood has helped, saying that they haven 't helped that many women. Although, when viewed at a statistical and emotional point of view, when women receive help from Planned Parenthood, they will praise it to others.
