Misplaced Identity in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland Identity is what makes up a person, it is what defines who you are. Identity is comprised of all of the pieces of a person and when these pieces begin to shift and change it can be quite a difficult thing to deal with. Identity is a major idea in Lewis Carroll’s book Alice in Wonderland in which young Alice goes on many adventures. Wonderland is a place where strange things seem to happen and everything that is thought to be, is not as it seems. While Alice is on many of her adventures in Wonderland she begins to undergo changes — to both her physical and psychological self. These changes range from forgetting everything Alice once knew to growing three feet at a time and then suddenly …show more content…
Alice’s personality is quite complex, displaying a wide array of different traits. One of the traits that Alice displays is that she is adventurous. An example of Alice’s adventurous side being displayed is when Alice is asking the Cheshire Cat for directions, to which Cheshire Cat replies “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” (Carroll 57) Alice responds by saying “I don't care much where… so long as I get somewhere.” (Carroll 57). Alice really does not mind where she goes as long as there is good times and fun on the way. In addition to being adventurers Alice also shows that she is caring, loyal, and willing to stick up for people who are being mistreated. These traits are best shown when the Queen orders the execution of three gardeners, “‘You sha’n’t be beheaded!’ said Alice; and she put them into a large flower-pot that stood near.” (Carroll 72). If Alice had not hidden the gardeners the Queen’s soldiers would have killed them for no good reason, Alice would not let that …show more content…
When people are rude it very much bothers polite little Alice. Alice’s low tolerance for rudeness is shown clearly many times in the story. This happens most obviously when Alice is talking to the Caterpillar and he keeps asking Alice who she is. This is shown when Carroll says “Alice felt a little irritated at the Caterpillar’s making such very short remarks, and she drew herself up and said, very gravely, ‘I think you ought to tell be who you are, first.’” (Carroll 41). Alice feels as though she is being interrogated by the Caterpillar and he will not stop, even though Alice has already answered him many
