Getting denied opportunities for an education is another problem many women confront. This is a problem that is seen more in developing countries. There are many reasons that girls are being held back from gaining an education in developed and developing countries, such as, poverty. Most of the time when a family has a lack of money they have to be selective on who to choose to send to school. The family will most likely pick the male in the family. There are significant cultural practices that come into place why a family will also only give permission for males to be the only ones to receive an education. Girls are taught from a young age to become “housewives”. Girls are taught to clean, make food, and be caregivers. Males in the household would also be afraid of the girls in their families to become educated and realize the unfairness of their domestic role. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization states that there are 31 million girls ages 7-14 not receiving a primary school education. They also revealed that two-thirds of the 774 million illiterate people are females. In the developing country of Somalia, 95% of the girls in the poorest families have never been to school. (UNESCO) To tackle this heavily dysfunctional problem of girls not receiving the proper education to thrive in this world, especially in developing countries, there needs to be more resources and willing educated teachers to be sent to these countries. Sending more resources like used textbooks, notebooks, pencils, and desks would super beneficial. In college there are many students who buy textbooks and end up never using them again. Instead of keeping these textbooks filled with so much information in the corner of a garage shelf, it would be best to send them to people who would greatly appreciate them. Teachers that are
