Misogyny In Video Games

In lieu of GamerGate, misogyny in gaming culture is being brought to the forefront of popular mainstream media. Misogyny has long been an issue for female gamers but misogyny isn’t the only issue that gamers face. There is also a culture of homophobia, sexism, and racism in the gaming community. Women who criticize these aspects of gaming culture are why internet trolls create movements such as GamerGate.
Gaming companies such as GiantBomb and news outlets such as CNN and MSNBC who normally sit on the sidelines of these discussions have started to take a stand and speak up against the patriarchal attitudes in gaming. Misogyny, or the prejudice against women, hurts not just women but all of us. It doesn’t just mean hating women but hating everything

The whole game industry must stand up against the harassment of women.”
Her video blog series Tropes vs. Women in Video Games analyzes sexism in mainstream video games. Two of her most recent videos discuss women as background decoration in games. These videos, and others like it, have drawn death threats in the past. Sarkeesian has also recently appeared on Comedy Central’s news show “The Colbert Report” where she challenged Colbert on his views and brought him to see that he is, in fact, a feminist.
Zoe Quinn, an independent game designer, came under fire in September. Her ex-boyfriend took to internet blogging sites and forums and did everything in his power to smear her name. The ex-boyfriend wrote a manifesto of sorts all about her alleged sex life and how she “slept her way around the gaming industry.” Over the course of September internet trolls posted her private, personal information to public venues, sending her death threats, hacking anyone who was suspected of being her friend, calling her father to tell him that she is a whore, and sent nude photos of her to her

Speaker, Anita Sarkeesian, in her video, Women As a Background Decoration, describes how women in video games are hyper-sexualized and most often recipients of violence. Sarkeesian’s purpose is to point out how women are portrayed as a “Non-Playable Sexual Object” and often degraded. She does an exemplary job at being effective in her argument by appealing to the three main rhetorical strategies and the specific language and style of her piece. Sarkeesian begins her video by firstly addressing that women are identified as objects in games and how this is affecting them in the real world. She challenges the listeners to think if objectifying women is morally acceptable and that they are more than “...decorative elements used to try and…

This shows that Video games franchises like ‘Tomb Raider’ are favorable by the male audiences due to the characters being so overly sexualized which grab their attention of these thirsty men. There are men out there that would spend their cash on games because ‘there 's a really hot chick in it’’. In the end sex does sell, most consumers would be attracted to video games with these sort of features. Compared to the female point of view of these unfair sexual representations, they would offer the same opinion as the male and prefer to choose something more sexier and feminine. Other video games without over sexualized female characters don’t gain much popularity compared to games with sexbomb characters like ‘Tomb Raider’ , ’Metroid’, or ‘final fantasy’.…

In this series, Sarkeesian utilizes many sociological and feminists theories to analyze female tropes in pop culture media (in this case, video games), highlighting how these tropes contribute to harmful and sexist towards women. Many others (i.e. gender activists and feminists) believe that 'harmful' tropes and stereotypes of women in video games can alter the perspectives of male…

I found Roxane Gay’s media criticism in Bad Feminist very compelling through her use of humor and pop culture to make powerful arguments about women’s representation in media. When contemplating my own research in feminist video game criticism, I found myself struggling with how I could emphasize the seriousness of harmful depictions of women in interactive media, when gaming is often viewed as a childish or “fluffy” topic. I found Gay’s breakdown of Fifty Shades of Grey in the chapter, “The Trouble with Prince Charming: or He Who Trespassed Against Us,” to balance the dichotomy of “serious” and “fluffy,” quite well. In this section, she analyzes the gendered narratives within the Fifty Shades series and constructs these narratives within fairy tale archetypes. This paragraph serves a close look at the trilogy’s Prince Charming, Christian Grey (page 199-200).…

Recently, in the video game community, women have been virtually attacked and have been rumored to gain positive reviews in a not so business-oriented way. To be specific, the article “A Conspiracy of Fishes, or, How We Learned to Stop Worrying About #GamerGate and Embrace Hegemonic Masculinity” articulates the cause of Zoe Quinn, who was one of…

The following question will look at the transmediated discourse of racist ideologies presented in the video game in question. This semester I have also been in a women’s studies class that looks at women’s agency in the Middle East, I even wrote a paper about female artist living in exile of Iran so I have become very sympathetic to the structure of women in the Middle East. In the class we discussed the messages of Islamic text and how they were very often misinterpreted to give men the larger end of the stick. However, there were a large number of cases where men protested with women to gain equal rights. After reading the article linked I have to say it was extremely upsetting.…

Gamergate unleashed a culture of anti-feminist, which is not only made up by conservatives, but liberals as well. Their main goal is to promote a less politically correct society, and less people telling them what they are bigots, sexists, or racist. Someone who claims they are anti-feminist does not necessarily mean they hate women. However, when social justice warrior groups call other people a racist, sexist, or a bigot, it is problematic because it ends a debate. Improving ethical journalism requires a change of culture.…
