Misconceptions Of Poverty

Decent Essays
Many people have misconceptions of poverty which, are most of the time, are false. The misconceptions includes statements such as: people who are poor don't look hard enough for jobs, or they don't have enough education to find one. They also believe that race, gender, and many other factors don't impact the problem of poverty anymore, which is also false. Sticking with race- we cannot fix the problem unless we resolve the relation between poverty and race. In America, race established obstacles have blocked the achievement of our shared beliefs and many of those same obstacles continue today. The cutbacks in poverty do not truly reduce racial inequality, neither do they surely reach low-income people of color. Making more money available

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend,” said by the most visible spokesperson, Martin Luther King Jr. valiantly lead the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement that erupted in our nation through the tension and hostility between the White and Black racial groups. This quote says that with love, unity, integrity, and human respect, we can change how differing races treat each other. We can also change the segregation and racial discrimination between races through these actions, not through a mandated taxation on definite American citizens. Money is not the answer, it never was, and it never will be. There is no escaping the horrific and appalling wrongdoings done to Native and African Americans in the early years of our country, nearly two centuries…

“”(W)hen you take money out of the neighborhood in which you live...the neighborhood in which you spend your money becomes wealthier and wealthier, and the neighborhood out of which you take your money becomes poorer and poorer.” (Doc G). The minute the African American people work together and reform their economy, they will not have to worry about job opportunity and will be closer to ending racial segregation and African Americans…

Poverty is a huge issue that should be addressed but because most of the people in poverty or the low class are African America it won’t addressed until the shoe is on the other foot. Although poverty in the United States has increased in general as time progressed the majority of people in poverty are still black. This has always been an issue in the black community and has always set us back. To go even further, some would even say that poverty within the black community is only getting addressed because there aren’t just black people involved in the circumstances. Sadly, the circumstances have yet to change and African Americans are getting tired of it.…

Poverty in America has taken control of 46.7 million people’s lives. From senior citizens, to working adults, to teenagers, and even children, poverty ruins people’s lives. Of course, some could say that there is poverty because we are such a successful nation; however, I believe that America can become a much finer nation without it. What do we mean when we talk about poverty?…

It has been more than 50 years since the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I have a dream speech”, yet racial inequality and tension about race is still very much a part of U.S. society. A recent report from the Pew Research Center called “King’s Dream Remains an Elusive Goal; Many Americans See Racial Disparities.” The Pew Report found that people from different ethnic groups varied in what they think about the prevalence of racism, and whether people are treated differently by race within particular social institutions. The report also documents significant economic inequalities between whites and blacks regarding wealth, family income, and homeownership.…

Closing the racial wealth gap is something that is important to many individuals, and according to Patrick McCarthy and Sara Johnson (2016) writing an article that points out the effects of the gap and how to fix the gap seems like a simple way to guide those in need. Both McCarthy and Johnson noted that many of the individuals that are suffering are individuals of color that do not having savings to fall back on. They are also living under federal government restrictions that are increasing the odds of not achieving the American dream of owning a home. However, for many Whites not having savings or federal restrictions are unknown, which gives Whites an advantage over individuals of color with having their American dream.…

The benefits of closing the wealth gap between African Americans and whites far outweigh the harm they can do so it’s time for American society to push for reforms and regulations that benefit the entire population and not just a particular race. When it comes to housing polices and homeownership, stricture enforcement of laws and regulations that prohibits predatory lending and housing policies would go a long way in closing the gap. Diversity in neighborhoods across the United States should be encouraged so we do not have overwhelmingly white suburbs and majority minority urban neighborhoods. Americans should push for a higher federal minimum wage. The current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour is no longer livable with our rising cost of living.…

There is one thing that unites all Americans, is the dream of living a better life: In the dream people work hard, are not judged by the color of their skin, live in a good neighborhood and can provide for their children so they can have a better future. The Pew data indicates that for some Americans, these dreams will not come true because of racial divide. In the article “King’s Dream Remains an Elusive Goal; Many Americans see Racial Disparities” the Pew Research Team shared data collected on the people’s attitudes about racial disparities. They also used census data to explain how race plays a role in whether people go to college or can earn a good wage.…

Whites’ and Asians’ median annual income consistently surpassed the median annual income of Blacks and Hispanics (O’Brien 64). These discouraging numbers enforce that racial/ethnic inequality exists in the United States. The one issue with this is that most people are not informed about this. I believe that education is the best solution to the racial/ethnic inequality problem in the United States. In a U.S. News article written earlier this year, Corydon Ireland described how education is the key to inequality.…

A large portion of the public does not understand why people live in poverty, and believe it is because they do not work hard enough; but this is simply not true. There are countless causes of poverty that people do not often recognize such as, inadequate job opportunities (especially in inner cities), lack of education, being raised in poverty as a child, mental and physical illness or disease, and many others. Poverty is often the root to other social problems as well such as crime, drugs, and the prison system, to just name a few. People or families who are living in poverty and do not have enough money to survive often turn to crime because they see no other options. With a lack of jobs in inner cities, there are often no way for these people to make enough money to eat other than selling drugs.…
