Misconceptions In The Healthcare Profession

Improved Essays
The most important word in any individual's vocabulary is their name. When you master another person's name they are more likely to provide trust and respect. Being in the healthcare profession and more specifically dentistry, mastering your patients/ customers name will be able to ensure returning business. With the simple gesture of addressing an individual with their name, it can put the patient at ease for a procedure they were afraid of undergoing. The majority of patients will have very little dental knowledge and be able to judge the restoration. It would be uncommon for a patient to look into the mirror with a new restoration or procedure and comment “This was 4.0 work.” Most patients will gauge their experience based on the way they were treated during the procedure.

This is something I have tried to work on for many years but still have trouble with the issue. One method that has helped alleviate the misconception was with eye contact followed by a smile. It shows the individual you are engaged with what they are saying. These are all strategies I attempted to use with Mr. John Milton.
The first portion of this essay was written immediately after the behavioral science experience. This will help my personal growth by writing on how I think it went. The final portions of the essay will after the video/ feedback from the simulated patient. It will be a compare and contrast on how I perceived the interaction with how it really went through feedback from the patient and by using the video recording.
Mr. John Milton was an older man born in 1948. Before meeting him, I scanned through his medical history chart. No red flags immediately jumped out other than his chief complaint; lower jaw pain radiating from the right side and moving to the

The experiment that Albert Bandura created used the exposing of children to two separate and completely different adult figures; one aggressive model and one non-aggressive one. After the child has witnessed the adult's behavior for an extended period of time, the child would later then be placed in a room free of any influential sources and were observed to see how the child reacted under the specific circumstances. Some of the predictions that Bandura made about what would occur are as follows: 1. Bandura predicted that children who were around aggressive behaviors of the model, would likely act out those feelings, there fore having an aggressive personality. 2.…

When people want to know what is wrong with them mentally, or physically, they usually go to seek help from a doctor. They seek help from a doctor because they trust them, and they are more knowledgeable than the patient. Some doctors may misdiagnose the patient either because either patient may have given them false symptoms (even so the doctor must do tests to insure that they are giving them the right type of treatment), or it could be the doctors themselves because they do have misconceptions between the terms fear and phobia. There are many different ways/ causes as to why doctors misdiagnose, which could be either from the patient, doctor, specialist, or…

Literature Review: Theory The literature review is vital to the success of this paper as it will look at the past relevant theories and studies to help define important terms while theory in this paper will serve to help define medical malpractice. The first step is to determine when a doctor is liable to their patient, and the courts can use the entry rules (Stein, 2012) to help determine when a doctor is liable to their patients. Also entry rules also help determine when medical malpractice occurs (Stein, 2012), but the theory also acknowledges when these medical malpractices should be exempt with the creation of the exit rules (Stein, 2012). Ideally according to Stein's theory, medical institutions should govern entry rules as they…

I attended the Bertha Strong Stroke Simulation event on March 1, 2016, at the Arizona State University Downtown Phoenix campus held at the Mercado building. I had attended this event in the past thought it would be interesting to compare my experiences. I was surprised to find that my first comparison would be the registration and receipt of materials needed to prepare for the event. It may have been due to familiarity with the process, but the current process seemed more coordinated. The registration process was different; it seems as though the old system had some issues as it has been changed slightly.…

This reading connects to what we discussed earlier in class about looking beyond a patient’s illness and looking at them as a person. It mentions how in describing the resistant patient, the physician had a different interpretation on how he pictured this man to be. As the doctor reads about the patient and upon seeing him, he’s created this mythological image of him by the way the patient described him to be. He looked past the fact that this man was a human and only saw him as his illness and this is a major problem in medicine today. Seeing the patient as more than their illness will help bring more understanding of the illness itself.…
