According to the World Health Organization, the health risks for an abortion primarily depend on whether it is performed safely or unsafely. Unsafe abortions are defined as being performed by unskilled individuals with hazardous equipment, or in unsanitary facilities (“Abortion." WHO). Out of 44 million abortions performed worldwide, over half are estimated to be unsafe. The primary reason so many abortions performed are considered unsafe, is because only an estimated 40% of women have access to legal abortion and 97% of abortions are in developing countries (“Abortion." WHO). When an abortion is preformed in an appropriate environment, they are among the safest medical procedures (“Unsafe Abortion: The Preventable Pandemic"). In the US, the risk of death from an abortion is 0.7 per 100,000 procedures. To put that in perspective you are at the same risk of death when you drive 760 miles in a vehicle. One issue that is always argued is that a fetus can feel pain. This is simply not true. Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 affirming the legality of a woman’s right to have an abortion under the Fourteenth amendment in the Constitution ("Roe v. Wade Fast Facts." CNN). This trial was referred to as Roe v. Wade. The cases ruling set precedence for all 50 states, denying them the authority to prohibit abortion. After the ruling many amendments have been put forth trying to overrule Roe v. Wade. These amendments are referred to as the Human Life Amendments (Nchla). All these amendments are sponsored or supported by different pro-life organizations. Multiple Human Life Amendments have reached congress but only one has reached a formal floor vote; Hatch-Eagleton Amendment. In June 28, 1983 it received 49 supporting votes by Senate, but fell short from passing by 18 votes. Scare tactics are a common method used to scare women from having abortions. Women are constantly harassed and ridiculed at abortion clinics by radical pro-life advocates. These advocates use different methods of harassment to try and change a women’s mind.
