Basically, Unconscious bias is a concept that is well documented in psychological studies, which basically says that people associate negative things with people of color and positive things with people that are white. In the presentation, they used unconscious bias directed towards white people and white privilege—here is my problem with that. I could not find one single study that showed a significant connection between implicit or unconscious bias, and biased behavior. I find it hard to believe that there is a way to alleviate what they call unconscious or implicit bias. I know that in psychology class we talked about free association and directing your conscious thoughts to your unconscious. If this is at all remotely accurate, I will acknowledge the possibility or reality of unconscious bias. Given that, if they show me evidence of a behavior that is racist, I am happy to stand right next to them and protest with them, but this idea that you are preaching and protesting about what is in peoples head’s that hasn’t even manifested into a behavior is absolutely asinine. I have thoughts every day that don’t manifest in behavior, so the problem with unconscious bias is that the idea is you don’t even know you are having the thought, so how can you stop the thought if you don’t even know you are having it? The whole white race can’t go to a psychologist or psychiatrist and receive free association therapy. That’s not a rational solution at
