Misconception: Critiquing My Writing

Decent Essays
Misconception was one of my biggest problem when writing. I tend to write down assignments at the last minute, expecting it to be a good paper. But I notice waited to the last minute wasn't the best idea. When I am writing I try my best to communicate with my peers. As a college student, I find myself the more I write the better I get when writing. When my peers are reviewing my writing I would respond with something positive first then I will start critiquing their writing and giving them lots of feedback

With my process of writing I try to take a lot more time typing and figuring out what I’m going to write and do it so I don't have to revise as much. I really try to not make mistakes so I save time revising and can move on to whatever I need to do. For example this project I've thought about what I want to type to minimize my revision…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Hi Roger! Hope you're doing very well. I've followed your career (which includes your campaigns & political beliefs) for some time now & to say the least, I'm a huge fan. I truly believe you put the constituents & our region first, which is crucial. Not sure if you follow the local Folsom political spectrum or my campaign for city council at all, but if you have, I was hoping to get an independent, outside & professional opinion on it.…

Every time a due date would come up for a major assignment, we took time to review each other’s work. I do not remember much from these various encounters, but I do remember receiving helpful comments. Granted, I may have felt upset by some of the things said, but I knew that the criticism I had received was right, and I wanted to do better because of the evaluations. This was unusually for me because before this course, I would hardly listen to others since I thought I was always right. Yet, that changed because I wanted to improve my writing, and to do that I had to listen to other people’s ideas.…

Second, I ask one of my classmates or one of my friends to review it and see if there is anything I could change to possibly make it better. Finally, I submit my work to the Writing & Tutoring Center that the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) has provided for us to use as a resource for our classes. Once I believe my work has been modified and made as great as it could possibly be, I turn it in.…

It’s hard to admit that the writing you made, your masterpiece, has errors. Many authors go through many extensive drafts before they are satisfied with the outcome of their work. Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

I never really had a good experience with peer-review back in high-school. It was mostly used as a time to mess around with classmates and do other stuff besides working on our papers. Needless to say, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. Once we actually got around to peer-reviewing I found it surprisingly helpful. I was able to get a lot of useful information from my partners on how I should improve my paper before turning it.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
