Reefs are considered one of the true beauties of our world. The many organisms who live there thrive and flourish in an explosion of colors, as seen in figure 3. Over time, humans have been building fake islands on top of these ecosystems. But, yet our kind is destroying these ecosystems in order to build fake islands on top. The early steps in the process is dredging, where huge ships scoop up sand from the ocean floor and dump it on top. This has been shown to suffocate and kill every life form there. Fish die, coral turns white, and the plants perish due to the fact there is no sunlight. 70% of the world’s oxygen is produced by marine plants. This particular island is located 250 kilometers west of the Palawan Island of the Philippines. It was constructed by the Chinese government in 2014 and finished in 2016. The space around it is said to be prosperous in unexplored gas and oil fields. The reef is composed of a lagoon and rocks that lie above water at low tide. In January 2016, work was already started on establishing a military base with a big harbour and a 2.6 kilometer runway. On July 12th, 2016 the board of the Permanent Court of Arbitration deduced that Mischief Reef is revealed at low tide and hidden at high tide, and are therefore low-tide elevations that do not require a claim to a territorial sea, exclusive economic zone, or continental …show more content…
It is a group of artificial islands. Out of the three, Palm Jumeira is the only island completed and open to the public. This piece of land is well populated with a residential community and has many luxury spots. There is an outer shell named the barrier island, it is shaped like a crescent and rests on the exterior. The barrier was built using about 12 million pounds of rocks from a close by mountainous region. It was designed to prevent eroding and the rising of water, without it the island would descend into the ocean. The dimensions of the barrier is three meters high and 160 kilometers in length. The ecosystem was not in good shape for a while, everything was essentially dead. This was due to the dredging and dumping of sand on top of the coral reef. After many years and the use of natural rocks, helped create a flourishing habitat for the animals and coral reef. They next drilled holes in the ground and positioned huge metal poles in the sand to keep the islands together. An unwanted situation then occurred, this process caused a major change on Dubai’s shoreline because of the shape waves unloaded sand on one side of the island and erosion happened on the other.
