Miscarriage can be defined as a loss of pregnancy that occurs randomly. It is also known as “spontaneous abortion” (“Early”). Miscarriages typically happen between the first 13 weeks of pregnancy and usually result in discomfort and bleeding (“Early”). Miscarriages are not an uncommon event; it is statistically shown that 10-25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage (“Miscarriage”). With that in mind, there are certain causes and effects of miscarriages. The first most common cause of a miscarriage may be a defect in the fetus. Studies show that most miscarriages are caused by chromosomal abnormalities (“Early”). These abnormalities occur when something is defective in the baby’s chromosomes and result in the fetus not growing properly. The abnormality can also be the result of a damaged egg or sperm cell (“Early”). In addition, it can also be due to a problem at the time that the zygote went through the division process (“Early”). The second most common cause of miscarriage is an infection or disease. Some diseases and infections that can cause miscarriage are bacterial infections and untreated STDs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes (“Miscarriage”). These can interfere with the circulation of oxygen and can be very harmful to the fetus. They can cause also miscarriage because they may lead to the rupture the membranes of the uterus and preterm labor.
