Rasheed really wanted Mariam to have the baby because he wanted to make up for the loss of his first child. While Jalil was knocked out drunk, “the boy went into the water unnoticed. They spotted him a while later, floating face down. People rushed to help, half trying to wake up the boy, the other half the father” (Hosseini 120). Rasheed felt bad about how his last son died and knowing that he lost another child was going to be disappointing because he wanted to make up for it. Losing his previous child in the way that he did already left Rasheed heartbroken. Now since Mariam had the miscarriage, he would feel bad because he really wanted to have a baby boy. He had “already buried one son,” so “[he] won't bury another” (Hosseini 54).Rasheed did not want to bury another son because he had already lost his previous child. He felt horrible about how he died already. The thought of losing his first child is heartbreaking and losing another one is breaking his heart more, so he wouldn’t bury the baby with Mariam. Rasheed was feeling a certain type of way about Mariam because “she could see it in the way he looked at her, when he looked at her. She was a burden to him” (Hosseini 56).After Mariam is having all of those miscarriages, she could see that Rasheed started to lack respect for her and one could see that he was disappointed. Since she was losing all of their babies, he was disappointed and could not stand the change of losing any more babies, so he saw her as a burden. He could not stand the chance of losing another child because he has lost his previous child
