Mistaken behavior is errors in judgement and actions made in the process of learning life skills. Many times we confuse mistaken behavior with misbehavior but it’s quite different. According to Sarah Smith misbehavior implies that it was intentionally, while mistaken behavior implies that it was unintentional. It is easy to say a child is misbehaving by his wrongdoing but we don't think about the cause of his actions. Sometimes children make mistakes like we do but, it is important that we take the time to properly handle the situation before labeling the child. Sarah also states that misbehavior implies that the child has the emotional and social tools to deal with complex conflicts, but mistaken behavior implies that children are still learning. With that being said, mistaken behavior can come out as many things like fighting for toys, having tantrums, or being aggressive. When a child takes toys away from another child it is not that he is misbehaving it may be that he hasn't been expose to sharing and is having a difficult time understanding that other children want to play with that toy as well. When a child throws a tantrum in class because they are transitioning to something new he might need reinsurance and feel secure that it is something he will like. Children have the need to feel safe so they act like they are misbehaving in the classroom but since it feels safe to them it shows in class. One of the major signs of mistaken behavior is the child's need for attentions. Children want to feel affection and sometimes the way to get it is not the right way.
