CHAPTER ONE SUMMARY: THE IMPORTANCE OF MIS

Q1: Why is Introduction to MIS the most importance course in the business school?

Moore’s Law is a principle about the history of computing hardware which states ‘the number of transistors per square inch on an integrated chip doubles every 18 months’. As more and more transistors fit in on an integrated chip, the better the performance of said chip improves, at a lower cost. This law is named after Gordon Moore, cofounder of Intel corporation. It is the main reason behind the downward shift of the price of computer technology in relation to its performance in the past years including today’s time – data storage and data communications became essentially zero. Q3: How can you use the five-component model?

The five components of an information system:
1. Hardware runs and makes up the computer system;
2. Software are programs that are built in on the computers;
3. Data refers to the results derived from what has been done;
4. Procedures are rules for people to follow; and
5. People are users of the information system.

The five-component model can be used to do a business process automatically. This can be done when people do a particular task by following a procedure, and move it so that the computer hardware runs following the rules from the software.

It can also be used to evaluate the scope of new systems by using a set of standards that has to be met, or can also be by determining its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats.

Every information system involves a person, and thus it is the most important component; however, the usefulness of the information gathered is limited by the quality of a person’s thinking – it depends on how the information will be

Every new system requires new tasks, costs, procedures, or hardwares. You will need to manage and utilise the new system with the employees applying considerable work effort. On the other hand, information technology (IT) refers to the technology itself behind the systems. This includes hardware, software and data components of the five component model. A person can acquire information technology by purchasing hardware, downloading software, or obtaining procedures.
