Mirror Neurons Affecting People's Behavior

Decent Essays
Mirror neurons are also responsible for why we often unwittingly imitate other people’s behavior. When other people whisper, we tend to lower our own voices. When we’re around an older person, we’re prone to walking more slowly. When someone says the words “scratching” or “scratch” we tend to start scratching ourselves. In short, when we see someone doing something, we almost do the same things in our minds. So when we see a pair of unsual earphones sticking out of someone else’s ears, our mirror neurons trigger a desire in us to have those same cool-looking accessories, too.

There are probably so many more ways people haven’t discovered yet or haven’t been announced. I agree with Jeremy Rifkin that our fellow creatures are more like us than we ever imagined. Animals are more like people because they have a sense of self. According to researchers at the Atlanta Zoo, “an orangutan named Chantek used a mirror to groom his teeth and adjust his sunglasses” (Rifkin 19). This quote shows that Chantek the orangutan used the mirror to make sure he looked good and to brush his teeth which humans do almost everyday when getting ready to go out or go to work or school.…

Here we are back to that mirror because as you’re looking through the book you’re look into a mirror and seeing yourself. Shakespeare also helps us notice we aren’t all exactly who we think we are. “But what makes the play terrifying is not that Macbeth looks like a fascist dictator-a popular staging these days-but because he looks like us.”(lines 86- 88). We see ourselves through others work usually in more ways than one.…

It’s Saturday morning, we sat with our legs crossed right in front of the television as our mothers begged for us to move back to prevent eye damage. Once you heard the drumroll intro, catchy tune and classic whistle we knew it was time for a brand new episode of the Rugrats. Growing up many cartoon characters were noticeably different from their fellow friends on the show. As kids we figured they were just different or crybabies such as the red-headed freckle faced Chuckie Finster from the Rugrats. However, looking at the series now Chuckie is more than just a crybaby he can be suffering from anxiety disorder.…

People naturally tend to imitate others. Take Christians for example. Their imitation ability allows them to get the religious knowledge from their parents, their peers, their teacher and so on, increasing the possibility that they have confidence in the existence of God. Blackmore elaborates a meme, which is everything that is passed from person to person, by analogy with a gene. “Their propagation by jumping from brain to brain, likened them to parasites infecting a host, treated them as physically realized living structures, and showed how mutually assisting memes will gang together in groups just as genes do”(Blackmore, p36).…

Many theories have been proposed for Autism spectrum disorder, amongst these after the discovery of mirror neurons in macaque monkeys by Di Pellegrino, Fadiga, Fogassi, Gallese and Rizzolatti (1992), is the broken mirror neuron theory. The two papers seek to investigate the influence of the human mirror neuron system (MNS) on the presence of Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Both papers were published in peer-reviewed journals and so appear to be reliable and the two papers exemplify the inconsistent results both supporting and opposing evidence of the broken mirror neuron system. The two papers differ on their conclusion of the role of the mirror neuron system, while Fan, Decety, Yang, Liu and Cheng (2010) concluded in their EEG study that an intact…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…
