Miriam Defensor Santiago is known around the globe for her intelligence and stand against corruption. Because of her brilliance, she received various recognitions: named as laureate of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for government service, cited for "for bold and moral leadership in cleaning up a graft-ridden agency", and recognized by The Australian Magazine as one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World. In addition, she brought honor to the Philippines in 2012 by being the first Filipina and the first Asian from a developing country, to be chosen in the United Nations as a judge of the International Criminal Court. Eventually, she resigned from this position because of her suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome which was later on diagnosed …show more content…
Santiago, considered as a child prodigy, received a lot of awards and achievements even during her school years. She graduated as valedictorian in elementary, high school, college - with an average grade of 1.1, and cum laude from the University of the Philippines College of Law. She even broke the record of 50-year male dominance in U.P.'s famous student newspaper, Philippine Collegian by becoming the first female editor-in-chief. She also did post doctoral studies in Oxford University, Cambridge University, Harvard University, University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, and Academy of Public International Law at the Peace Palace (Horsfield, "Miriam Defensor Santiago"). All of these facts show that not only is she educated, but also has excelled all throughout her study years. Given all the schools she was enrolled in and the degrees she attained, one can be assured of her vast knowledge acquired from her long years of study - local and international. Why is it important then for a President to posses these degrees and diplomas? Is it only for the sake of boasting? Definitely not. By studying in different schools and thoroughly learning about law, surely, she acquired not only the knowledge needed but the experience and skill as well.
