Boggs was an activist who constantly look for solutions to problems relating to “labor and civil rights, feminism, Black Power, Asian Americans and the environment” (npr.org). She worked on these issues together with her husband, James Boggs, who was also an activist. Grace Lee Boggs was mostly involved in the city Detroit’s activist communities because Detroit became her hometown once she moved there in the 1940s and saw the conditions and difficult situations of living there. However, her activism initially began in Chicago where she “joined the movement for tenants’ rights, and then the Workers Party, a splinter group of the Socialist Workers Party. In these associations, as well as in her involvement with the 1941 March on Washington, Lee focused on marginalized groups such as women and people of color” (npr.org). She was a very friendly person who easily mingled with people of all races and helped them find solutions to their problems. For example, in 1992, she and her husband founded a program called Detroit Summer and the sole purpose of this program was to bring together people of all ages, cultures, and races in order to rebuild the city of Detroit by planting gardens in vacant lots, creating murals on buildings, and renovating houses. These college students describe their time in college and how they had been sexually assaulted. Most of the victims of rape were females, but quite a few males had also been raped. There were two main themes that were presented in this documentary. According to slate.com, the first was that these sexual assaults were not “just a date gone bad, or a bad hook-up, or, you know, miscommunication. Instead it was campus rape that is a highly calculated, premeditated crime, one typically committed by serial predators.” The second theme is that “even when school administrators are informed of harm done to female students by these repeat offenders, schools typically do nothing in response because colleges are primarily concerned about their reputation and if a rape happens, they’ll do everything to distance themselves from it.” These two themes are extremely shocking and heartbreaking because college is supposed to be an intellectual experience and students go to college in order to get a good education and be successful in life. Unfortunately for females, it has become very difficult to deal with situations like these. All of the rape victims from colleges around the United States have come together to stand up for themselves and fight for their rights and bring justice.
