The book I chose for my independent reading project was The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin. I would recommend this book to people between the ages of 14 and 18. When these men have a mindful lady at their side, the marriage is happier for the both parties. Ferdinand is telling Miranda how much he loves and respects her “I, beyond all limit of what else i' th' world, do love, prize, honor you” (Shakespeare, 3.1.85-88). The inclusion of honor in this sentence shows that not only is Miranda good because she is pretty, but also because she is skillful and intelligent. This is something Ferdinand really likes and wants in his woman, and that makes him content with the marriage; meanwhile, Miranda feels loved for her traits and valued for her brains, making her happy to be in the marriage as well. On page 116 Shikibu writes about Genji, a seventeen-year-old girl-crazy boy agreeing to stay faithful to one…

So, then, it holds that although adultery is a private matter one must not regard it as “morally neutral”.…

Tara Parker-Pope in “The Happy Marriage Is the ‘Me’ Marriage” discusses what people in marriages do to stay together; in addition to what makes them happy in a relationship. Pope expresses how many couples want more than just a companion; they want a marriage to withstand all hardship, conflict, and time. She discusses the differences of present day marriages from ones in the past. She states that people today are looking for fascinating mates to in turn make their existence more gratifying; compared to in the past where marriages formed for security and social status. The “Michelangelo effect”, coined by Caryl Rusbult, states that couples shape one another to better reach success and objectives in life (Parker-Pope).…
