In the book Miracle’s Boys by Jacqueline Woodson, a main theme and occurrence is emotion, and showing emotions in both positive and negative ways. Although heavy emotions are often common in YA literature, they aren’t often portrayed in a positive way, which can actually have a negative effect on teens. This happens because people feel as though their emotions aren’t valid because a character in the book is told their emotions aren't valid. The story is told from Lafayette’s point of view and takes place after Charlie gets back home from the Rahway Home for Boys after staying there for two years post committing an armed robbery. Throughout the story, there are many flashbacks and memories that Lafayette has from both before and after his mother died. Ty’ree is Charlie and Lafayette’s legal guardian and is struggling to both provide for their family and also trying to stay strong as a family after the death of their mother. The quote I chose is “All the tears were jamming themselves together and pushing their way out”. It happens pretty early on in the book when Lafayette is describing his memories of when his mother died. He didn’t cry when she died or at her wake, but after all the relatives and friends left and he and Ty’ree had a moment alone, the tears finally came. This quote is significant to the book because it shows the very raw emotion that comes after losing a loved one.
A main theme in Miracle’s Boys is loss, and this is the first time in the book that Lafayette talks about losing his mother, and the aftermath of her death. I chose this quote because I think it showcases the power of emotion and how it can bring us
