“The role of manager is someone to works with and coordinating other people work activities in order to achieve organisational goals” ( Robbins et al 2006, p8). Management is required in every aspect of an organization and also involves differents roles and responsibilities to manage the organization well. The purpose of this essay is to show that Mintzberg’s managerial roles are relevance to the management job. According to Mintzberg (1975) the manager's job can be described in terms of multiple roles or organised sets of behaviours identified with a position. Which consist of ten different roles including three interpersonal roles, three informational roles and four decisional roles. All three level of managers are working basically does the similar job. However, according to Pavett and Lau (1983) they stated that different level managers will be given with different type of situation to handle. A middle level manager duty is to translate the plans and general goals created by the top management into a definite objectives and activities for the staffs. Chandler (1977) stated that middle managers’ jobs is to cover exclusively the supervision for the lower class level staffs. The middle managers require to execute two important integrating tasks, which are investigation of the top management and workforce, and also their own integration across functional lines (Schlesinger & Oshry 1984). Besides that, middle managers plays a key role in knowledge sharing process as well. Knowledge sharing is considered to be a fundamental means through which organizational competitive advantage can be reached (Jackson et al. 2006). There is three roles to describe the informational aspect of managerial work, which is monitor, disseminator, and spokesperson. Monitor role entail collecting current information from multiple sources. Besides that, disseminator role is to pass factual and value based information to both inside and outside of the organisation. Furthermore, spokesperson role is to transmit information about performance and policies from inside the organization to outsiders. As an informational role manager, they should establish a good relationship with both subordinates and individuals, even when outside the work unit. The manager that serve as the centre of the unit is responsible for gathering, receiving, and transmitting information that will concerns the members of the work
