Minority Groups In Politics

Improved Essays
Out of all the people we surveyed, about two thirds of them identified as part of a minorities group. A little over half of the participants identified with cultures based on ethnicity, less then a third identified with cultures based on race, and others identified with cultures such as sexual orientation and gender. 36% said that minority groups are accurately represented in within the college compared to the 7% that said these groups accurately in the political sphere. The large difference between the college and the political sphere could be due to a larger percentage of minority groups within the college then those in politics. Within society as a whole, about 64% of people thought that minority groups were only sometimes represented equally.

The functions of state legislatures include: enacting laws, in which a legislator introduces a new law ; approving budgets, which occurs when state money is allowed to be spent so long as it is approved first by legislators; serving constituents, answering to requests from residents of a legislators' district ; along with overseeing agencies, holding hearings in order to understand why state administrators chose to be in their position. I believe approval of budgeting is the most important function since observing of passage of the appropriation and tax measures in the state budget would allow control of any activity of the state government. 2. Reading Stacy Lee’s article was very eye opening to me. Being a minority myself, I was no stranger to many of the things she spoke about. The biggest thing I took away from the article was the idea of being categorized and boxed in; separated on different levels with whites being at the top of the scale and everyone else falls below that; some lower than others but always lesser than whites. Based on how you look, people will assume different things about you and that all originates from back in the day when slavery came into the picture. The idea of a better and/or best race came from there and even though slavery is officially no more, the idea of a better race still lives on through media.…

I often find myself the only minority in the room or at the decision making table. I am leaving a place where I was the majority and could friendly discuss my culture and beliefs without feeling as though I would be judged. This is my personal example of culture-cross interaction that I experience daily (Reid & Schram, 2012). I have often asked myself if I was a status quo. In this environment we could use dark skin and younger souls to relate more to the families we serve.…

Students should be required to take courses in minority or ethnic studies as part of all college degrees. The unique value of ethnic studies in colleges and universities is that these studies promote respect and understanding among races, support student success, and teaches critical thinking skills. Ethnic studies by and about racial minority groups presents a different narrative that is shaped partially by histories of oppression in the United States. as well as by the intellectual and cultural resources and traditions of those communities. Ethnic studies evolved from the demands of Black Americans for an education that is relevant and meaningful, that affirms their identities and selfhoods, and that works toward human liberation.…

Health care disparities are defined as “differences in access to or availability of facilities and services” (HSRIC, 2015). Race and equality have been an ongoing issue in the United States, but there has been improvement over many years. Although equality has improved in several areas, health care is still an issue. Many people believe that health care has improved for everyone in the United States, but for the minority groups it has not.…

The author highlights the “diversity wheel” to allow readers to visualize the categories that they may fall into. Depending on your core characteristics and your background, the wheel can place you in a positive or negative societal light. By the same token, it is important to realize that one can be privileged, and underprivileged at the same time. Individuals can belong to a dominant group, yet be poorly educated, live in poor economic standing, and be of an alternative sexual orientation, leaving them only “slightly”…
