Minorities in Prison
According to the National Conference of State Legislators, in 2018, only thirty states in the U.S. had any sort of legislation passed to address racial profiling by the police. Minority rights groups, including the NAACP, have continued their fight to try and push states to pass laws that protect minorities when dealing with police. Many group leaders are looking to separate the duties of an immigration officer and a police officer. In many states, the law requires a police officer to also help enforce immigration, which forces many of them to rely on stereotypes and to target a particular race.

However, the city has taken measures to improve training after a video was released that showed a Chicago police officer shooting a young African-American man 16 times. (Price 2017) The department is looking to add another thousand officers and add a de-escalation course to reduce violent confrontations. Many of the activists are citing similar problems as activists who want to reform the prison system as a whole. That believe that anti-drug enforcement has gone too far, that there is a lack of treatment for the addiction of drugs, and that prosecution is increasingly aggressive. The biggest difference between the arguments is that the activists for incarcerated women believe that state federal law enforcement don’t take into consideration the personal circumstances of women. The increase in harsh drug enforcement has led to many women being given tough sentences for simple connections to larger crimes, without consideration of the actual connection to the crime and why the women were forced to corroborate with the actual
