Some of the main themes in this book are the good and evil in people, social class, and the justice system. These main themes are portrayed by some of the minor characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. The minor characters that portray these themes are Mrs. Dubose who the children realized had good and evil inside her, Mayella who used the justice system to her advantage because she is a white women, and Dolphus Raymond who gets away with being with a black women because of his social standings.

In the opinion of the kids Jem and Scout Mrs. Dubose is a mean disrespectful old lady. Mrs. dubose would always have something mean to say to Jem and Scout even if they didn't do anything, on Pg. 99 Said "hey Mrs. Dubose" and Mrs. Dubose replied "Don't say that to me you ugly little girl! You say good afternoon Mrs. Dubose!" They have always thought she was a terribly evil lady that said horrible things

Dolphus Raymond just happened to be one of Maycomb’s high class citizens which pretty much helps him get away with a lot of the stuff that he does. Dolphus Raymond lives with a black woman and has mixed kids with her and nobody in Maycomb looks twice at him. If any other white man in Maycomb county were to live with a black woman everyone would go insane but since Dolphus Raymond is rich plantation owner that is supposedly drunk no one pays any attention to it. On Pg. 272 Atticus finch in trial said “what did she do? She tempted a negro.” which was a time honored code of their society but no one cared when Dolphus Raymond did it. Social classes in this book are huge because if Dolphus Raymond were as poor as the Ewells he wouldn’t have gotten away with spending all his time with black

She said that Scout and Jem were the sassy and disrespectful mutts. Besides being nasty and cruel Mrs. Dubose was also incredibly courageous. For example Harper Lee states “I wanted you to see something about her-I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man standing with a gun in his hand. at the courtroom. The blacks would sit up in the balcony and the whites stay on the bottom because they are more important (Lee. 219). The black waited patiently for the whites to find a seat before they did, and a black man or woman would get up for a white, so they could sit down if there was not enough seats. On top of this, there was a black community and a white community. Negroes who moved to Maycomb could not just live where the whites did they had to go to the black community to live.…

Breaking Conformity in To Kill A Mockingbird Contrary to the common perception of Maycomb, the town where Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird takes place, not all of the citizens who live there conform to the typical norms that are expected of them. Calpurnia is the housekeeper of the Finch household where the protagonist, a young girl named Scout, lives. Dolphus Raymond, a white man who is portrayed as an alcoholic, lives with the colored people in town. The depiction of both Calpurnia and Dolphus Raymond demonstrates that even in an average town like Maycomb, there are people who continue to defy the boundaries of common stereotypes.…

Dubose, a frail old lady is surprisingly a very important foil to Jem throughout, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” “Don’t you say hey to me, you ugly girl! You say good afternoon, Mrs. Dubose!”(103). Mrs. Dubose said that after Scout and Jem were walking past her house one day and Scout said hello to her. Jem would never say that to someone, and that shows a difference between Mrs. Dubose and himself.…

Dubose as an evil, cranky, old lady until they are able to spend time with her and learn her secrets. The children thought Mrs. Dubose was incredibly rude, and they did not want to walk past her house because they “would be raked by her wrathful gaze, subjected to ruthless interrogation regarding our behavior, and given a melancholy prediction on what we would amount to when we grew up, which was always nothing” (Lee 132). Mrs. Dubose judged the children, made rude remarks, and seemed completely heartless. She often insulted Scout for unlady like behavior, and she insulted Atticus, Scout and Jem’s father, for defending and supporting African Americans. It was not until Atticus forced Scout and Jem to read to Mrs. Dubose every day that the children learned Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict who was trying to get clean before she died.…

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, there are many different themes depicted such as hypocrisy, prejudice, courage, coming of age/loss of innocence, justice, femininity, but racism is illustrated more heavily. Living in maycomb, racism is allowed; if you were not racist towards the blacks then you would be criticized by being called names such as “nigger-lover”. Atticus ignored the rest of the people in Maycomb and went out of his way to support a black man known as Tom Robinson, who was accused of rape. Racism is the key theme in the novel.…

To Kill a Mockingbird - “Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This passage was a major part of the story because of the symbolism that has now been revealed. The Mockingbird is a harmless and pure hearted animal, which in this story symbolizes Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. I chose this passage because of the strong meaning behind it.…
