Did you know that The Lion King is a modern-day retelling of Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet? It was surprising to hear that, but after watching the two movies, their storyline themes are parallel to each other. The two films' storyline included sibling rivalry, loyalty, and revenge, power and corruption, trust and friendship, appearances are deceiving, and decisiveness and hesitation. However, the way the characters are presented and their roles are different in a way. In the next paragraphs, I will explain the minor characters' importance in the movie and how they are similar and different in both movies. To start off with one of the minor characters we see in the beginning of both movies, the mothers, Sarabi and Gertrude. Both of our protagonists love their mother, although …show more content…
Our love interest for Simba is Nala while Hamlet's love interest is Ophelia. Nala is strong, independent, and caring. Ophelia is weak, obedient, and needs a male to guide her, which is why she became insane when her father died. Both of the females differ in many ways but have a similar role of having an impact on the male leads. They both serve as an emotional trigger for our protagonists. However, Nala had a positive impact on Simba as she motivated him to come back to Pride Rock and take back the throne. As for Ophelia, she had a negative impact on Hamlet since they argued every time they interacted. Finally, we are introduced to our protagonists' friends, the duo. The duo of The Lion King is Timon and Pumbaa while the duo of Hamlet is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. In the Lion King, the duo finds Simba alone after he ran away from home and take him in to raise him. However, in Hamlet, the duo did not find Hamlet and was actually appointed by the King to keep an eye on him. Although that is the case, both of the pairs attempt to find out what is troubling the main character and help them

One similarity is the use of symbolism. In the book a plant, a window, and light are used as symbols throughout the story to represent various ideas such as dreams, opportunities, and hope, respectively. In the movie, the same symbols are used to embody the same concepts. The movie allows watchers to gain a visual understanding of the importance of the symbols based on expressions and the mood of the play at a given time. Dreams are another similarity between the book and movie.…

I believe that Shakespeare’s Hamlet is about mystery and the unknown. Throughout the play, characters struggled with their emotions and actions because of the overbearing sense of uncertainty that always seemed to be present. The play began with a mystery involving the presence of a ghost that “harrow [ed the guards] with fear and wonder” (1.1.53). This sighting led to more uncertainty when Hamlet became unsure if the ghost was an honest spirit or a devil in “a pleasing shape… [that was using Hamlet’s] weakness and… melancholy… [to] abuse [him and] to damn [him]” (2.2.594-597).…

Laertes asks for permission and receives in addition to a lengthy advice from his father approval to leave. I disliked the fact that Hamlet over thought every little thing and was unable to kill Claudius when the many opportunities he was given arose. But when it came to killing Polonius, and sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths, after finding his own letter ordering his death, that was easy and he acted on impulse. Which is what made me question Hamlet’s sanity. Was Hamlet enjoying acting insane and subconsciously did not want it to end therefore not really wanting to kill the king? When Hamlet was in the graveyard and met the grave digger who had no sympathy for the dead which offended Hamlet, I agreed with Hamlet.…

A variety of characters make an appearance throughout Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet and all play a role in the overall work of the play. Three minor characters in particular are able to give further understanding on Hamlet’s character and the work as a whole: the gravediggers from Act IV, Yorick from Act IV, and Fortinbras prince of Norway. A minor character differs from major characters because they are more static, appear only briefly in the play with limited dialogue, and the decisions they make do not make a huge impact on the overall plot. The gravediggers and Yorick alike fit this bill perfectly, as they only appear in Act V, Scene 1. They do not grow as characters through more development or changing behavior from the beginning of their…
