On May 5th in 1180, Minamoto Yoritomo and Prince Mochihito began to gather alliances. By the very next month, Prince Mochihito had a bounty over his head and was forced to flee to a monastery in Mii-dera. After news of Taira troops marching their way, the prince and three hundred warriors relocated south where more warriors could reinforce them.

This only delayed the final battle. The Taira leaders were defeated at the battle of Dannoura on the Inland Sea. The battle, originally starting on hundreds of ships, ended with hand to hand combat. Many of the Taira drowned themselves to prevent being killed. During these five years of war, we have lost much. Many of us have lost family and friends; loved ones who can never be replaced. Many of us have lost possessions and land; things that have been passed down from our ancestors for generations. But this is the sacrifice for the greater good. A new era has arrived. Japan is changing for the better and it is significant.
The outcome of this war is a huge change to our society. We have a new emperor and a new shogun who will rule the country better than the last. We have a military leader whose family has the knowledge and therefore, potential to keep us safe from rebellions, revolts and invasions for centuries to come. We have a ruler who is willing to work to keep his people safe by bringing us together as a country. We are uniting and becoming
