A highly debated topic is what the minimum wage should be for workers in America. The minimum wage is the bare minimum that a person needs to live or at least that is its intent. One side of this argument feels that minimum wage is too low, and that we should raise it. The United States Department of Labor says that raising the minimum wage will be helpful for both the economy and business (Minimum Wage Mythbusters). However, other people think raising the minimum wage will have negative, unintended side effects. The CATO Institute, in their Four Reasons Not to Raise the Minimum Wage article bring up a few points, saying that raising the minimum wage would, “result in job loss,… hurt low-skilled workers,… and may result in higher prices for consumers” (Four Reasons Not to Raise the Minimum Wage). We should not raise the minimum wage. The U.S. Department of Labor has multiple points as to why it would be beneficial to raise the minimum wage. One point they suggest is that raising the minimum wage will have a positive impact on business. They state that, “academic research has shown that higher wages sharply reduce employee turnover which can reduce employment and training costs” (Minimum Wage Mythbusters). This is a valid point, but not fully thought out; there will likely be fewer jobs available if the employer has to increase the pay of the workers, thus increasing the motivation of the employee to stay with their job.
