Antonio French, an alderman of the 21st ward in the St. Louis City, opposes a bill that will increase the minimum wage. Due in part to the financial repercussions that he thinks the city will sustain if it is doing it alone. The City of St. Louis is proposing an increase in the minimum wage, from its current state of $7.65 to $11.00/hr., in incremental stages by 2018; by doing this they are going above the minimum wage that is set by the state and Federal Government. French believes that jobs will be lost to the surrounding areas that will have a lower minimum wage. The increase will bring about an imbalance in the pay scale between the city and surrounding counties thereby encouraging employers to move across the city line.…

I think employees who receive tips should be paid the same minimum wage as non tipped employees because tips are not reliable enough for employees to make a fair income. Higher pay for restaurant jobs will be a positive incentive for people to find jobs at restaurants. Refering to the "2014 Economic Policy Institute report" that said "workers who rely mainly on tips are more likely to need government assistance. " Less people will need government assistance if they are making a stable minimum wage like non tipped employees and this will leave more resources to the government for other valuable programs. Contrary to what is stated in Letter…

Raising Minimum-Wage Will Hurt the Middle-Class When people have problems pertaining to someone or something needing something in order to resolve the issue they usually fix the problem by creating a plan to give it to them; and it usually works. For example: if a baby is crying, they will stop once they are fed; couples who are divorcing reconcile their major disagreements once both sides get what they want; parents will stop nagging a child once they clean their room. In respect of this, the way to fix the problem of American Citizens asking to raise minimum wage in America is to raise it right? Wrong!, changing the minimum wage may seem like the solution to help the minimum-wage workers but it won’t; so much so that it will actually cause…
Is the American minimum wage a living wage? I was at the CenturyLink Stadium working my ass off. I was holding up a banner on the field for what felt like an eternity. That day I worked 7 grueling hours on the field while taking breaks in between.…

In 1938, the minimum wage was established as part of the fair Labor Standard Act. Over time, of infrequent and inadequate adjustment the minimum wage, no longer serves as an adequate wage floor. One of the most controversial issues in the U.S. is if minimum wage should be increased to $15 or not. People believe that if minimum wage was increased it would help out with day to day living.…
a) The elasticity of labor demand is the percentage change in employment resulting from the percentage change in wage. The amount of unemployment because of the increase in the minimum wage highly depends on the elasticity of labor demand. The more substitutable the workers are by machines, the more is the effect of the increase in the minimum wage. Jobs that are more elastic, have flatter labor demand curves, are less responsive to changes in minimum wage and lay off more workers due to the increase in the minimum wage than those that are inelastic and have steeper labor demand curves. (draw a picture).…
Why does the minimum wage exist, for what purpose does it serve? By definition, according to Merriam-Webster, the phrase “minimum wage” stands for “an amount of money that is the least amount of money per hour that workers must be paid according to the law.”. In the context of that same definition, Merriam-Webster links “minimum wage” to the phrase “living wage”, which is defined as “a subsistence wage. A wage sufficient to provide the necessities and conforms essential to an acceptable standard of living.” With that said, does the minimum wage provide that minimal acceptable standard?…
Everyone needs money to help them with their daily life activities like eating, shopping and even paying bills. For that, you will need a good paying job, right? CATO Institute, a public policy research organization, states “Some policymakers are proposing to raise the minimum wage, but that policy would be harmful. Research shows businesses would respond to the increased costs by reducing employment, particularly for low-skilled workers” (CATO). Basically saying this minimum wage will not help anyone, and it will do nothing but damage.…

Minimum Wage When the cost of living goes up shouldn’t the minimum wage also? America the land of the great is seemingly increasing to appear not so great. We offer underpaid jobs so that our hard working American brothers and sisters can lace up their shoes in the morning put in 40hours a week to come home with a measly 7.25a hour and struggle to make ends meet with their families. This has been disputed throughout the ages and there are lots of scientifically studies and research that have been done to sway each side to the others opinion. I feel that the minimum wage needs to be raised and we should be rewarding our hard working American sisters and brothers.…
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the minimum wage. Many believe the wage should be lifted to help low-income families out of poverty. Others argue that a higher minimum wage reduces overall employment and encourages reasonably affluent workers to enter the labor force. Minimum wage increases could often lead to employers hiring suburban teenagers to replace disadvantaged adults who need a job more than the latter. The minimum wage includes positions that are entry-level to gain experience and skills necessary to become a more productive worker.…
