Most people who have minimum wage jobs do not live in poverty. There is a major misconception among people who believe if you work a minimum wage job, you will live your life in poverty. This is not the case in majority of the scenarios. In fact, in most situations, these adults working minimum wage jobs work very little. Research shows 11 percent only work a total of 20 hours a week (Sherk, “Raising the Minimum Wage Will Not Reduce Poverty”). With working very little during the week, it is not much of a surprise that they live in poverty. Working only 20 hours week would give an adult minimum wage worker $145 a week in the state of Pennsylvania, and that is before income tax.
