Minimum wage to a child/teenager may not seem very important, in fact to a young child/teenager it may just seem useless, but to anyone that is in the workforce, and works countless hours a week, it is your life. Minimum wage affects the way someone lives, and has since it was created in 1938. That minimum wage was introduced as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The FLSA also covers things like youth employment standards, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and standards for government employees at the local, state, and federal levels. But prior to the FLSA, at least one state had passed its own minimum wage laws. Massachusetts passed minimum wage laws in 1912 (although they only covered women and children). For example, one negative effect would be the unemployment rate of youth/young adults in the work force. If the minimum wage were to go up to $15, employers would attract the older and more educated individuals to work for their business, therefore giving the minority group a very hard chance to find employment. Also, the red-state, blue-state divide could get worse. “The dramatic differences in minimum wages soon to be paid across the country could worsen the income gap between rich and poor states.
