This is because teens go to school, they go to work, they have sports or band practices, or they just go out with their friends (“O’Donnell”). As a teens grows and there schooling becomes harder due to college, driving becomes essential. Teens do not have time to learn how to drive in college. Why you might ask? To obtain a drivers license one needs a minimum of 40 hours behind the wheel and 10 hours at night to make a total of 50 hours (Behind). No parent or student has time to do theses supervised hours while going to school and work. It would be almost impossible to work with both parents and their kids schedule to make sure they both get to their destination on time. However, this only works for city kids. There is little to no public transit in rural areas, and some people cannot ride bikes or afford them. Also, it is too far to walk from place to place due to all of the open space in between homes, roads, and to town. But it is just overall too dangerous to ride bikes or walk. Twenty-three percent of the U.S. population live in rural areas, and yet 56% of all traffic fatalities occur in rural areas (Rural). Without safer roads and no driver's license, people would have to travel along high-speed roadways with few pedestrian accommodations (Rural). Also, public transit does not take people wherever they want to go; it does not take people to their friends houses, it does not pick people up from school, and it certainly does not run all day. City buses stop picking up and dropping off people at anytime between 8 o’clock to 10 o’clock depending on the day (Metro). This just would not work because someone might work late, and then the buses are not running so they have to call a taxi or someone to come pick them up, and if someone works late almost every night then they would be spending more money on a taxi every night than they would if they just had a
