Minimal wave was coined as a genre name in retrospect. It makes reference to the most electronic and minimal forms of New Wave, Coldwave, Synthpop and Post-Punk. In its most purely electronic and synth-driven form, it is called Minimal Synth. It is also referred to as synth wave and minimal electronics (instrumental minimal synth).

Most of the music is recorded on tape and the emerging artists composed mostly in their bedrooms or garage so they recorded a lot on cassettes and exchanged cassettes with other artists. The instruments used were mostly affordable analog synthesizers and drum machines manufactured in the 1970s and 1980. The drums were mostly snappy and basic sequenced patterns and the synth melodies are often very thin and trebly. Most of the bass synth sounds were sequenced into very basic bass lines. Sometimes there was usage of circuit bending, where you take a circuit board from an old synth, toy or something else with a circuit board and change the sound by fucking the circuit board up and make a completely new sound.
