The purpose of the lab was to observe the environmental impact on the behavior of pill bugs (Armadillidium vulgare) by using the steps of the scientific method. . We placed two pill bugs in an enclosed space and recorded the amount of time they spent in two categories of living spaces: hard rocks or soft sphagnum moss. Despite predicting that they would have a preference for a softer area, both pill bugs spent more of their time in the rocks than in the moss. This suggests that Armadillidium vulgare has a preference towards environments with hard surfaces over soft ones, possibly due to factors like light or surface area. However, certain experimental errors such as material density and poor handling may have skewed the accuracy of results.…

Bed bugs have similar engorgement characterizes as many other bugs when it comes to the sodium solution concentrations. When offered only water versus when a solution that contained phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), the later was what was found to be the situation where more engorgement occurred. It was expressed that mouthparts that bring about the acceptance of different concentrations of sodium chloride are receptors known as gustatory receptions. In the instances lower sodium was engorged and high sodium was rejected.…

The objective of the Isopods Lab was to figure out if the Pillbugs favored the wet environment or a dry environment. After reading the pre-lab report on Pillbugs, my hypothesis was that “If water is added to an Isopods environment, then the isopods will favor the wet environment.” By using two groups of Isopods, one group was put into a dry environment and the other had one drop of water into their dish. After ten minutes of observing the Isopods, the results showed that the Pill Bugs prefer the wet environment more. As time went on, the bugs in the wet environment survived longer than the Isopod in the dry environment.…

This is because of the vibrations from the sound, which the bugs think could be predators, so they try to get as far away as possible. The classical music has less vibrations, so the pill bugs don't think it's a predator. If I had to do something different in my experiment I would do a few more trials with some things different. An example of this would be trying different volumes. Where I would go with this would be to see if this experiment would have the same effects on different types of insects.…

In addition, the pillbugs were influenced by each other and were prone to crawling on top of each other. They made several attempts to get out of the tray and had to be prodded back in the container. The slight tendency of the pillbugs to migrate to the lighted side may be because they believed that the light indicated an escape route. Lastly, our group had used a concentrated light source for the lighted side, like a flashlight, in the original procedure. It seemed reasonable to balance artificial darkness (the construction paper) with artificial light.…

Instead a crayfish in cold water and a crayfish in room temperature were both calm the moment they were taken out of water, while the other two crayfish took their time with getting comfortable. Although the crayfish exhibits habituation, dishabituation, stimulus generalization and spontaneous recovery as its defense reflex, when stimulated with rapidly approaching targets (Glantz, R.,1974), it did not truly show if temperature had any significance to its behavior. These results tell me that temperature could have possibly not have any effect, however it does bring several other factors to the light. Some things that we missed while selecting the crayfish was gender, age and size. With the factor of size, being missed during this experiment, other researchers have found that size is directly related to behavior in both genders.…
