On collision, these bullets would flatten causing larger wounds than the kinds of bullets before it. It would break bones into tiny pieces, that would splinter tears into the flesh, the bullet carried deadly bacteria that led to gangrene which the only way to stop was with amputation. Gangrene is dead tissue caused by infection from bacteria.
Some slaves used this attack as a chance to escape. By the end of the war, half a million slaves escaped to the North. In these wars family members fought side-by-side, it was a motivation for them to persevere in battle.
George Meade had only been in the war for three days when he was promoted to Commander. On July 2nd, 1863 at 12:00 am, Commander George Meade a topographical engineer instructed his troops to take positions in a shape of a “fish hook”. Putting troops on Little Round Top, Cemetery Ridge, Cemetery Hill, and Culp’s Hill. This setup allowed Meade to answer attacks from any direction.

They planned to attack in the middle of the fish hook and separate the Union army. One of the Confederate units was led by General William Barksdale. Barksdale had a fiery hatred for the Union even the thought of them filled him with abhorrence. Barksdale was not aware that the terrain ahead of him was not looked over. Unknowingly to him, Lee’s cavalry was 12 miles away, raiding supplies. Calvary is a soldier on horseback they are the ones who see and hear everything for the army. Without their horseback troops to guide them Barksdale and his unit almost came into direct sight of some Union soldiers. Barksdale had no choice but to find a different route that would delay their arrival by two hours. Because of this delay, Meade was able to strengthen his defenses. 25 years prior to the Battle of Gettysburg the telegraph was invented and it revolutionized wars.
The telegraph was a machine used for communicating long distances with signals over a wire. The Confederates cut the wire and Lincoln lost connection with Meade. To continue communication Meade used a new kind of code, by waving flags Meade formed letters of a code. Now, this form of communication is called flag semaphore.
