A mini volcano is one of the oldest tricks in the book but do you know how they really work? The chemicals used in a mini volcano is vinegar and baking soda and it bubbles and fizzes. Baking soda is really sodium bicarbonate which has a chemical formula of NaHCO3. Vinegar is acetic acid mixed with water and has the chemical formula CH3COOH. When the chemicals are mixed they have a formula of NaHCO3 + CH3COOH –> NaC2H3O2+ H2O + CO2(about education).
